Supermarket
customer
satisfaction sinks
Customer satisfaction took a hefty hit
in the retail world this
year, according to the
American Customer
Satisfaction Index, and
supermarkets were no
exception.
Satisfaction with
supermarkets dropped
1.3% to a score of 78 in
the annual ACSI Retail
and Consumer Shipping
Report, which was
released Tuesday.
Trader Joe's and
Wegmans were able to
make small strides. In
fact, Trader Joe's saw a
1% rise to a score of 86,
making it not only the
top-ranked supermarket, but the highest
rank among all retailers.
Wegmans' 1% bump
gave it a score of 85.
Whole Foods sank
2% into a tie with Aldi,
which remained unchanged at 84. Costco
also remained steady
at 83, but nearly all
other large supermarket chains fell. H-E-B
slipped 1% while Sam's
Club, Whole Foods,
Hy-Vee and Kroger each
dropped 2%.
The biggest decrease
6 - MARCH 2019

goes to Southeastern
Grocers, which fell 3%
to 76. However, Walmart
continues to sit at the
bottom, dropping another 1% to 72.

Nearly half of
consumers to
increase organic
consumption
Forty-percent of
consumers say they
plan to increase their
consumption of organic
foods in 2019, according to a new survey.

Organic produce
grower-shipper
Earthbound Farm's
annual Organic & Other
Lifestyle Choices survey
also found that people
with kids at home are
more likely than those
without kids to buy
organic (52% vs 41%).

United Fresh
unveils plans for
2019 convention
A host of new networking activities are
among the highlights of
Washington, D.C.-based
United Fresh's annual
convention.
Slated for June 10-12
at McCormick Place
in Chicago, this year's
show features several
new networking events,
including:
· The Partner
X-Change, a B2B matchmaking program where
buying and selling
communities will come
together throughout the
afternoon for meetings,
engaging new retail and
foodservice operators to present new
products, pitch new
programs and develop
new relationships.
· VIP attendees will
depart McCormick
Place following the
new Partner X-Change,
to travel to the United
Fresh Opening Party on
a VIP Cruise on Lake
Michigan.
· Tuesday evening, the
inaugural United Fresh
Late Night at House of
Blues is where attendees will gather to celebrate the first day of the
expo with an evening
of entertainment and
energy in downtown
Chicago.
Also new for this
year's show, United
Fresh has organized a
Convention Committee
of over 40 industry
leaders who are driving
the energy and development of the changes

taking place at United
Fresh 2019, says Tom
Stenzel, United Fresh's
president and CEO.

Corbion ingredient
receives innovation
award
The American Society
of Baking selected Corbion's Verdad MP 100 as
the winner of the ASB.
Innovation Award in the
Health, Wellness and
Nutrition category.
Launched in
September 2018, Verdad
is a clean label replacement for calcium
propionate, a synthetic mold inhibitor.
Through a combination
of vinegar and natural
flavors, the ingredient
prevents mold growth,
subsequently extending
the shelf life of bakery
products.
"This recognition
from ASB is truly an
honor," says Ashley
Robertson, market
manager, bakery, for
Lenexa, Kansas-based
Corbion. "The baking industry runs on
innovation, and there
has been a tremendous
amount of effort focused on trying to give
consumers the simpler,
friendlier labeling they
want without taking
away the shelf life and
flavor they've come to
expect. We're proud and
pleased that Corbion
accomplished that goal
with MP100."
ASB presented the
award to Corbion
at BakingTech 2019,
which was held in late
February in Chicago.

organic show variance in prioritization.
Seventy-one percent
of household shoppers
with children in the
home say it would be
somewhat or very important to them to feed
their child's classmates
or teammates an organic snack if they were on
snack duty.
On the other hand,
only 52% of house
shoppers say it would
be important to them to
include organic food at
a dinner party.
The survey also
found that:
· Millennials, Gen Z
and Gen X are more
likely than boomers
to choose organic
(upwards of 50% for the
younger gens, and only
30% for boomers).
· Millennials/Gen Z are
the most likely to say
they purchase organic
food "all the time" (20%
for Millennials/Gen Z vs
8% for Gen X and 7% for
boomers).
· Fresh fruits and
vegetables are the most
commonly purchased
organic product category (84% saying they
purchase), followed by
fresh eggs (56%), fresh
dairy (55%) and fresh
meat (54%).
