THERE WERE MANY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE ANNUAL
MEAT CONFERENCE, held this year in Dallas. But one
thing is for certain: the popularity of the show, a co-production of the Washington, D.C.-based Food Marketing
Institute and the Washington, D.C.-based North American Meat Institute, continues to grow.
"Retailers used to send one or two people, now they
send 7, 8 or more," says Rick Stein, FMI's vice president
of fresh foods. "And a lot of them are executives. The
growth has been fantastic."
Where retailers come, suppliers and third-party service providers hoping to win their business will follows,
and AMC '19 was no different. A record 1,770 people
attended, up from 1,620 last year.
Stein credits much of that success to the close
working relationship between FMI and NAMI to create
programming for the show relevant to all members of
the meat industry, up and down the supply chain.

"In the past we relied on RFPs. Now, there's a really
collaborative effort to put together content that retailers and suppliers want, to analyze where the really big
discussions are happening."
Those discussions, spread out over the conference's
three-day schedule, touched on topics including regulations, transparency, AI, meal kits, transportation, social
media, cooking technology, meat alternatives, sustainability and others.
And the large number of breaks, receptions and
breakfasts, Stein says, created ample space and time for
networking.
"Retailers told me they had great conversations with
suppliers," he says. "It was a casual atmosphere where
people talked to each other a lot. I think when retailers
go back to their offices, they'll find there's a lot of content
and information to share with their bosses. The suppliers
I've talked to are also very happy."
