choices
for all

To say that demand for plant-based proteins has reached
critical mass might be the food industry understatement of
the year.
The rumblings started in the past year or two, when
meat industry giants like Cargill, Tyson, Hormel and ADM
all announced they were exploring meat alternatives. This
was supplemented by the success of the Impossible Burger,
the signature product from Redwood City, California-based Impossible Foods.
And then, this spring, things officially exploded. In April, Burger King announced its Impossible Whopper, its own version of the Impossible Burger.
McDonald's followed with news of its own plant-based burger a month later.
Also in May, Springdale, Arkansas-based Tyson announced plans to begin
rolling out its first plant-based protein products this summer, with a full-scale
launch projected for the fall.
When companies like these jump on the bandwagon, it's pretty safe to say
that plant-based is a trend that's here to stay.
As the world's population increases and the agricultural land needed to raise
animals decreases, plant-based proteins will play a bigger and bigger role in
feeding people. Health-related reasons also are driving category growth.
But it doesn't mean that we all have to become vegetarians.
It's not just the McDonald's and the Tysons of the world that will insist on
that point. Even plant-based industry leaders like Danny O'Malley, president
of Huntington Beach, California-based Before the Butcher, isn't out to convert
people away from meat.
"Probably 80% plus of our products are consumed by meat eaters," he says.
"That's the core of our customer base."
The alternative protein companies that are thriving are those that realize the
vast majority of their customers are not eating plant-based every day, or even
every other day, but maybe once or twice a week. Plant-based is and will be
just one protein choice among many.
By 2050, there will likely be about 9 billion people on Planet Earth. There's
plenty of protein business to go around.
