Climate change has already made a big impact
on the North American shellfish industry.
Fortunately, the industry has found a way to
fight back.
Ocean acidification, caused by too much
carbon dioxide being released into the
atmosphere, started having a major effect on
shellfish production in the Pacific Northwest
about a decade ago, says Bill Dewey, director
of public affairs for Bellevue, Washington-based Taylor Shellfish Farms.
"Our oyster seed production was in a crisis," Dewey says. "At our hatchery
and other major hatcheries, oyster larvae production was off 75%."
Taylor and other companies endured that shortage for years until they figured out ways to cope with it.
"It's been a long evolution but we now have sophisticated water chemistry
monitoring systems in our hatcheries and automated treatment systems so our
babies can build their shells again," Dewey says.
As a result, volumes have returned to their levels of a decade ago.
That said, the work is far from over. Ocean acidification is projected to get
worse over the next 30 to 50 years, Dewey says. That means the search for
solutions is just beginning.
One idea is to use naturally produced sea grasses to suck up excess carbon,
thereby reducing acidity.
Another one, part of a major project currently underway in Washington
State, involves co-culturing seaweed next to oyster farms, with the aim of
altering the chemistry of the farm's water so oyster shells can grow properly.
It's funded by the Paul Allen Foundation.
For these and other reasons, Dewey chooses to take a glass half-full attitude
to his company's and his industry's future.
He says that even if none of these solutions work, in a worst-case scenario,
farmers can always try different species that are more adapted to higher-acidity
conditions.
"We have a number of wonderful collaborations between universities, industry and government to try to find ways to adapt. I'm optimistic."
