education battle, retailers would
be wise to consider sampling.
Sixty-nine percent of all consumers would like to sample organic
fruits and vegetables more often.
Organic is not nearly as tough
a sell as it was a decade or two
ago. More than half (53%) said
they're influenced by signs
for USDA Organic, and 62% of
Americans feel that organic
produce is better for their health.
Four in ten think that organic
fruits and vegetables are worth
the extra cost.
Perhaps most tellingly, half of
all Americans say it's important
for supermarkets to offer organic
fruits and vegetables.
Forty-one percent said it's
important for meat and poultry,
30% for deli/prepared and 25%
for bakery.
Just 28% of those surveyed
think organic produce stays fresh
longer than conventional. On the
flip side of that, however, just 17%
think organic spoils faster.
Four in ten consumers, meanwhile, think organic tastes better
than conventional, and just 3%
think it tastes worse.

VERDE FARMS OPENS
USDA ORGANIC-CERTIFIED
FACILIT Y IN NEW JERSEY

Woburn, Massachusetts-based Verde Farms, a producer and
processor of grass-fed, free-range beef, has opened a new
processing facility in Mullica Hill, New Jersey. The company
said the facility will be US Dept. of Agriculture Organic and
level 2 SQF-certified and it will process frozen and fresh beef
into a variety of vacuum-packed products.
"Opening our own processing facility emphasizes our foundational commitment to offer the highest-quality products,
while maintaining transparency and a consistently rapid
response to our customers' needs," says Dana Ehrlich, CEO
of Verde Farms. "In addition to now owning a significant
portion of our own product processing, we're happy to offer
the benefits of our state-of-the-art processing facility to
other specialty meat companies who normally wouldn't meet
the high daily volume requirements typical of larger, modern
facilities."
The new facility is located adjacent to Mullica Hill Cold
Storage. That facility provides USDA ID services and is centrally located to serve customers in New York, New Jersey,
Delaware and Pennsylvania. Finished products from Verde
can also be distributed nationwide via its proximity to the
New Jersey Turnpike.
"Verde Farms has been a valued customer for over 12 years
- and I've been a strong supporter of all the company has
stood for since the very beginning," says Fred Sorbello,
founder and president of Mullica Hill Group Cos. "Having
been with them since their inception, offering space for
Verde to build out its processing capability at Mullica Hill was
a natural and logical extension of the relationship and we look
forward to the company's continued success."

Another change: organic
shoppers are younger, a fact that
retailers need to pay attention to.
"Forty-five percent of organic
shoppers are now millennials," Jagiello says. "They didn't
invent the label, and the organic
industry will need to ensure that
they continue to feel ownership
and connection with the USDA
Organic seal."
One of the things consumers
have consistently voiced is an
appreciation for the transparency
behind the organic label, she
adds. Standards are easily accessible, and the rulemaking process
is public.
At the farm level, meanwhile,
consumers love to see the people, land and practices behind
their food. The next step, OTA
believes, is translating those success stories to the point-of-sale.
"Retailers should consider how
they can apply this learning in
their stores," Jagiello says. "In prepared foods, they can highlight
a particular ingredient producer
or a local farm. They can explain
what it means to bake organic
bread, or how the standards for
organic meat differ from conventional practices."
Millennial shoppers in particular, she adds, like to vote with
their dollars for practices and
companies they perceive are
doing good in the world.
It's just a question of executing
throughout the perimeter.
"Retailers can help them make
those connections around the full
perimeter of the store - not just
