While this particular promotion was for canned soup products, the
THROUGH THE COLD WINTER MONTHS, many consumers fi nd
themselves craving the warmth and comfort of soup.
In November 2022, Portland, Ore.-based Pacifi c Foods worked with
Arlington, Va.-based Wakefi eld Research to survey 2,000 Gen Z and
Millennial adults in the United States on their soup consumption in
relation to comfort.
The study found a strong correlation between heartbreak and soup
cravings, as 88% of respondents said they would turn to a bowl of soup
for comfort while going through a breakup.
The study also found that 59% of those surveyed had personally
experienced or knew someone who had gone through a breakup in
December, making last month the top breakup month of the year.
To put these results to use, Pacifi c Foods partnered with Nick Viall,
a podcast and television personality who rose to fame after starring in
The Bachelor, to create the Pacifi c Foods Broken Hearts Soup-port Kit
that was available for a limited time in December 2022.
" Throughout my life, I've experienced the highs and lows of love
and through my experiences, I've gained lessons along the way, " Viall
said. " That's why I teamed up with Pacifi c Foods to curate the limited
time only Broken Hearts Soup-port Kit. No matter what stage you're in
unique way Pacifi c Foods expanded on a connection that was already
there to appeal even more to younger generations shows just how
creative retail deli departments can get with their instore promotions
as well.
Supermarkets do not have to just stick to the traditional seasonal
promotions centered around national holidays. A connection found
between breakups and soup is more than enough of a starting point.
Appealing to the alienated
During the 2022 holiday season, Charlotte, N.C.-based Dole
Food Company wanted to cater specifi cally to vegan consumers,
acknowledging that it can be a challenge for vegans to fi nd fulfi lling
meals, especially during the holidays.
In mid-November, Dole published 10 plant-based recipes that the
company created to be less alienating for its vegan customers.
" We're here to show that our vegan alternatives are just as delicious and
post-relationship, we picked the perfect lineup of comforting soups to
fi t your mood and get you through even the messiest of breakups. My
personal favorite? It's Not Me, It's You Chicken Noodle Soup! Nothing
beats a classic, with a twist. "

One of the featured recipes was Little Chef Potato-Leek Soup, a
hearty soup that is both vegan and gluten-free. It can be found along

Little Chef Potato-Leek Soup
Ingredients
* 2 tablespoons olive oil
* 1 large leek, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced
* 2 cups small Dole Caulifl ower fl orets
* 1/2 cup chopped Dole Carrots
* 1/2 cup chopped Dole Celery
* 1 teaspoon dried thyme
* 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
* 1/2 teaspoon paprika
* 3/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
* 1 large Dole Potato, peeled and cut into 1/2inch
cubes
* 1 cup unsalted vegetable stock
* 3 cups gluten-free and soy-free oat milk
* 2 tablespoons fi nely chopped fresh Italian
parsley plus additional for garnish (optional)
* 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (from 1

Instructions
Heat oil in a large saucepot over medium-high
heat. Add leeks, caulifl ower, carrots, celery,
thyme, oregano, paprika, salt and pepper; cook
8 minutes or until vegetables are tender, stirring
frequently. Add potato, stock and milk; heat
to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium; cook
10 minutes or until potatoes are easily pierced
with a fork.
Purée soup in batches in a blender on high 20
seconds or until smooth, transferring soup back
to the saucepot; stir in parsley and lemon juice.
Serve soup garnished with breadcrumbs and/or
parsley, if desired. Makes about 6 cups.
