Soup
for
you
There's something special about soup.
It does many things at once. On a basic level, it literally warms you up,
providing real, immediate comfort.
Soup is also a " comfort food " in the sense that you can put whatever you
want into it (or leave whatever you want out), tailoring it to your particular tastes.
Soup is also what we call in our family " a vegetable delivery device. " That green bean or
broccoli isn't so unpalatable if it's hidden in a delicious soup. It's a great way to get your healthy.
Soup is also budget-friendly. Throughout history, different cultures have used it as an
inexpensive way to repurpose and stretch leftovers.
Soup has always been a hit, and it's easy to see why. And in many of today's grocery
prepared foods sections, it's downright hot.
" In tough times, people look to soup as a meal replacement. A soup and a salad or a soup
and a sandwich, it's high-quality, affordable and healthy, " said Bob Sewall, vice president of
sales and marketing for Blount Foods.
New from Blount are economy 10-ounce containers of three of its most popular soups
and one of its most popular hot sides: Chicken Noodle, Tomato, Broccoli Cheddar and
Macaroni and Cheese.
All retail for a recommended $3.99. And Blount is encouraging its retail partners to crossmerchandise
them with a sandwich or salad in their deli prepared sections. That has the
potential to give consumers a healthy, filling, delicious meal for under $10, Sewall said.
And quality doesn't have to suffer when prices are affordable, said Mike Seeger, vice
president of Walmart and club stores for Kettle Cuisine.
" Premium soups are on trend. The biggest driver is that you can get a hearty meal for
under $5. It's a health play as well as a value play. "
There's also no need to give up variety when building a retail soup program, said Andy
Columbaro, Kettle Cuisine's senior director of business development.
" We have to balance a great tasting product with a cost that provides value to customers.
And retailers always looking for more variety. "
