Compostable packaging from
Eco-Products, a Novolex brand
GreenStripe
Boulder, Colo.-based Eco-Products added a variety of paper
bags, insulated and non-insulated sandwich wraps, pinch bottom
bags, French fry bags, cutlery bags, boxed interfolded deli paper
and grease-resistant multipurpose bags to its GreenStripe line of
compostable products in March.
Each product is made with no-added PFAS and is certified by the
Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), meaning all have undergone
rigorous testing to prove they are compostable in commercial
facilities. The paper bag products are also certified by the Forest
Stewardship Council, which means the products come from
responsibly managed sources.
" The need for well-labeled, certified compostable solutions across
the broader packaging mix continues to grow, " said Nicole Tariku,
director of product development for Eco-Products. " These new
wraps and bags are the latest addition to that mix and will help round
out renewable and compostable take-out programs for customers
across the foodservice industry. "
Veridian
Also in March, Eco-Products launched its new Veridian line designed
to make it easier for workers and consumers to quickly sort between
compostable and non-compostable packaging.
" Contamination from non-compostable products continues to be
the biggest challenge facing composters accepting compostable
products, and it is significantly impacting the growth of composting
infrastructure designed to process food scraps and packaging
together, " the company said. " The result is more food sent to
landfills, which is a well-established driver of climate change. "
Every product in the Veridian line - cold cups and lids, hot cups
and lids, clamshells, deli containers, portion cups, salad bowls and
cutlery - clearly says the word " compostable " and features the BPI
certification symbol. The products are also tinted green and brown to
make them more distinguishable.
" Consistent on-item labeling is essential to giving foodservice operators,
their customers and composters the ability to quickly and easily
identify products as compostable, " said Wendell Simonson, director
of marketing at Eco-Products. " That's what Veridian is all about. "
In October 2023, Eco-Products launched its own Controls Intended to
Remove Contamination (CIRC) Program - an open source, systems
approach to contamination mitigation for the foodservice industry.
The program features scorecards that are divided into four sections
- Procurement, Operations, Communications and Hauler
Engagement - and contain criteria and conditions that are either
required or encouraged.
" Composters have an extremely limited ability to deal with
contamination once it gets to their facilities, " Simonson said. " That
means we need to do everything possible to keep non-compostable
products out of organics streams, and consistent on-item labeling is a
foundational piece of that effort. "
Certified B Corporation
In November, Eco-Products was also recertified as a B Corporation,
as is required every three years by B Lab, the nonprofit organization
that assesses and certifies companies as B Corps.

to positively impact all stakeholders - workers, communities,
customers, and our planet. "
