Study: snacks
trump meals for
many consumers
Many consumers
would rather eat snacks
instead of meals,
according to the fifth
annual state of snacking
report from Mondelez
International, Inc.
The report highlights
various insights on
consumer snacking habits
studied throughout 2023.
Mondelez developed the
study in collaboration
with the Harris Poll,
gathering data from
thousands of consumers
across 12 countries.
One of several
areas that Mondelez
emphasizes in the report
is how integral snacking
is to a consumer's daily
routine, with 88% of
consumers surveyed
saying they snack daily
and 60% saying they
snack twice a day.
Of these consumers,
66% said they are more
conscious of snacking
prices but have not made
any significant changes
to their snacking habits.
In terms of consumer
ages, three in four
(75%) said they have
" ritualized snack time " to
eat a snack at a special
moment or time of day.

In terms of the
younger surveyed
consumers, 94% of Gen
Zers and millennials
said they snack once or
more a day with more
than two-thirds (68%)
saying they snack at
least twice a day and
one-in-three (33%)
saying they snack three
or more times a day.
Many consumers believe
snacks satisfy several
physical and mental
health requirements
such as boosting energy
(75%), improving mood
(74%) and aligning with
fitness goals (70%), the
report said.
Nearly three-quarters
of surveyed consumers
(74%) said they are
interested in snacks
tailored to personal
health and nutritional
needs while two-thirds
(65%) said they are
interested in snacks with
personal customizations
options such as adding
preferred flavors or
ingredients.

sales buck trend
Center store wraps
and flatbreads show a
category experiencing a
2.8% decrease in dollar
sales and a whopping
11.5% drop in unit sales,
according to Circana
data for the 52 weeks
ending Dec. 31, 2023.
Gaze outside the
center store aisles,
however, and the picture
for tortillas and flatbreads
gets much brighter.
Tortillas/wraps/flatbreads
in the perimeter dollar
sales are up 4.8% with
a negligible decrease in
unit sales of 0.5%.
Much of this growth
is driven by rising
consumer acceptance
of these products as
alternatives to bread,
buns and rolls. Tortillas
and flatbreads also
benefit from their healthy
halo and new product
innovation for better-foryou
(BFY) varieties.
When compared
to other bakery staple
categories, tortillas are
performing better in
the center of the store,
despite the performance
of its related flatbreads in
this section. Compared
to tortillas and taco kits'
2% growth in center
store unit sales, center
store bread is down 3%
in unit sales and buns
and rolls dropped 2%.
Higher prices are keeping
these categories afloat
with 5.2% and 8.3%
increase in dollar sales,
respectively, for these
categories. Much of
tortillas' and flatbreads'
popularity as alternatives
for breads, buns and rolls
can be attributed to their
nutritional profile.
A major driver for the
success of the tortilla
category is the growing
Hispanic population
in the United States.
The Pew Research
Center reported that
the Hispanic population
grew 26% from 2010 to
2022 in the United States.
With a diversifying US
population, cuisines
from around the
world become more
normalized, starting
with the United States'
neighbor to the south.
Giant Eagle
expands DoorDash
partnership
Giant Eagle has
expanded its partnership
with DoorDash to offer
consumers same-day
grocery delivery services
from all of its Giant
Eagle supermarkets and
Market District locations
across Pennsylvania,
Ohio, Maryland, and West
Virginia.
Following a pilot
program with select
Ohio stores in 2022, this
partnership expansion
allows all Giant Eagle
shoppers to get groceries
delivered in less than an
hour, on average, the
retailer said.
Giant Eagle said with
the inclusion of its
stores, more than 99%
of DoorDash's monthly
consumers in the US
have access to a grocery
and convenience retailer,
and the retailer's loyalty
program members'
benefits extend to the
DoorDash platform.
Additionally, Giant
Eagle is part of the
DashPass program, so
DoorDash members
with the subscription
can order groceries
from Giant Eagle stores
with a $0 delivery fee
and reduced service
fees when they meet
the minimum subtotal
requirement.
