THE BIGGEST CHANGE in the
lineup of labeling solutions
provided by Bowling Green,
Ohio-based DayMark Safety
Systems for commissaries and
other customers has been the
introduction of the Matt77
direct thermal label printer, said
Jill Carte, director of product
development.
The printer allows users to
print labels of multiple lengths
on the same roll, which saves
time and reduces the amount of
different label SKUs needed by an
operation, Carte said. The Matt77
joins the original Matt85 printer
as part of DayMark's kitchen
automation platform.
Both the Matt77 and the Matt85
are Bluetooth-enabled direct
thermal printers that allow for
quick and easy label printing.
With wireless technology, labels
can be printed on-demand,
reducing label inventory and
saving money.
Additionally, recipe information
and training videos can be
uploaded at a central location
and automatically shared with
all connected store locations.
That allows staff members
to easily access materials,
be better prepared to handle
ever-changing processes, and
increases consistency across
multiple locations.
COVID has put an increased
focus on food safety as a whole,
and that includes food safety
labeling, Carte said. The biggest
impact has been on labeling for
off-premise dining-tamperevident
labels that ensure food
is delivered safely and without
being compromised are in
high demand.
" As demand for products
such as these has been high
even before the pandemic, we
fully anticipate this to continue
to be the case long after the
pandemic is over, " Carte said.
" Demand for our labeling
products is increasing across all
channels, including commissaries
and central kitchens. The
pandemic has put safety under a
magnifying glass and foodservice
establishments of all kinds are
trying to keep pace as best
they can. "
Bill aims to make food
labels more user-friendly
Congress has introduced the
Food Labeling Modernization
Act of 2021, which would update
front-of-package food labeling
requirements, require updates to
the ingredient list on packaged
foods and apply consumer
friendly labeling requirements.
The bill was introduced by
House Energy and Commerce
Committee Chairman Frank
Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), House
Appropriations Committee
Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro
(D-CT), and Senators Richard
Blumenthal (D-CT), Sheldon
Whitehouse (D-RI), and Ed
Markey (D-MA), according to the
House Energy and Commerce
Committee.

a right to know what's in the
food they and their families
eat, but that isn't always easy
with today's opaque food
labels and marketing claims, "
Pallone said. " The Food
Labeling Modernization Act will
update our nation's packaging
requirements to provide clear
nutritional information to
consumers to help them make
healthier and more informed
purchasing decisions. I

with Chairwoman DeLauro
and Senators Blumenthal,
Whitehouse, and Markey to get
this pro-consumer bill passed
and signed into law. "

direct the Secretary of Health
and Human Services (HHS) to
establish a single, standard frontof-package
nutrition labeling
system in a timely manner for all
food products required to bear
nutrition labeling.
The bill will also strengthen
current laws to target trends
in marketing that confuse or
mislead consumers when they
are attempting to compare
food products, according to
its sponsors. Specifically, the
legislation will require new
guidelines for the use of the word
" healthy. "
Over the last few years, the
Food and Drug Administration
has updated some requirements
for the Nutrition Facts label on
packaged foods. The act would
build on that initial progress by
ensuring consumers have access
to easy-to-read information
in order to make informed
purchasing decisions, according
to its sponsors.
