Another
fresh
comeback
With so many fresh perimeter departments hit
especially hard by COVID, it makes the many comeback
stories we've been able to tell in 2021 all the sweeter.
Take retail titan Target. The company recently
announced that, following a tough 2020, it enjoyed
double digit growth in its food and beverage business in the second quarter of this year.
And the fresh perimeter led the way.
" Performance was led by our bakery, cafe and deli businesses, which grew more than
50% as these departments were closed during part of the second quarter last year, " said A.
Christina Hennington, Target's chief growth officer. " We also saw double-digit growth in our
fresh categories, benefiting from an expansion in the number of items available for Drive
Up. In fact, nearly half of this year's growth in our produce business has been driven by the
growth in Drive Up orders. "
That's the second eye-opening takeaway from Target's Q2 announcement: During the
pandemic, many Americans overcame their hesitation of ordering fresh foods online, and
that behavior has stuck.
For years, it was an industry truism among many that people wanted to see their fresh
meat and seafood, wanted to touch their produce, wanted to smell their instore baked
goods before they bought them.
And though that will always remain the case for a significant percentage of shoppers, it's
a truism that's becoming less true every day - including in my own household, where the
online-purchased fresh fruit has been consistently great all summer.
Getting people to buy online still means crossing a confidence gap, and one way
more and more retailers are doing that is by boosting their store brand business. Either
consciously or unconsciously, shoppers loyal to a certain store will gravitate toward branded
products they can only find there.
Little surprise, then, that the Q2 news from Target also included strong growth numbers for
the retailer's store brands. The company reported an increase in owned-brand penetration
within its food and beverage business of about 70 basis points compared with last year.
Fresh, online, store brands - the post-pandemic future is now.
