plastics, to give them a new life. We believe using clear rPET is wasteful
and a regressive step for our industry. "
The company said the new black alternative tills, which will begin to
roll out in April, will have a hue that varies between blue, green, purple,
and black, depending on the color of the base material that is being
recycled.
" By choosing black alternative rPET with NIR sortable colorant, we're
not just packaging mushrooms; we're packaging a greener future, "
Knobeloch said.
Also at the Southern Exposure show, Yerington, Nev.-based Peri &
Sons Farms featured its Earthbag for onions.
" This unique bag, made with paper/bamboo mesh, is biodegradable
and compostable, " the company said. " It's the type of responsible
produce packaging that makes consumers happy today and makes the
earth a better place tomorrow. "
The organic onion varieties available in the Earthbag packaging are
yellow, white, red, sweet and combo.

Peri & Sons also showcased its Gourmet Organic Shallots at the show,
which are available in recyclable, biodegradable boxes.
Plastic bag alternatives
DS Smith launches Shop.able Carriers
for transporting groceries
In March, London-based DS Smith launched a new
reusable solution to replacing plastic grocery bags.
" According to data from the US International Trade
Commission, Americans use 102 billion plastic bags
a year, and plastic shopping bags are only used for an
average of 12 minutes by consumers, with very few
of them ever being recycled, " DS Smith said. " The
new product comes at a time when many are closely
examining the impact single-use plastic has on the
environment. To date, 18 US states have enacted
legislation to ban plastic bags, and major retailers have
joined the Beyond the Bag initiative, a group seeking to
identify, test and implement viable design solutions and
models that more sustainably serve the purpose of the
current retail bag. "
The new stackable, recyclable Shop.able Carriers
feature the company's patented, food-safe, and waterresistant
Greencoat coating, for durability. They are
also customizable, creating advertising opportunities.
" Individual Shop.able Carrier boxes sell at retail price
points similar to reusable plastic totes, with each box
having the capacity to replace between 5 and 7 plastic
